Wintry Woodland: Our Holiday Fabric Collection on Spoonflower
Today is a great day for Root & Branch because we’re launching a new fabric collection!
I’m definitely the kind of person who isn’t opposed to celebrating Christmas from the moment it gets cold… and my definition of cold is anytime that I have to wear layers. Needless to say, I’ve been in the festive spirit for a few weeks now.
I think there is something magical about the “holiday” season, which (for me) lasts from Halloween all the way to mid February, when we celebrate Chinese New Year. I include every celebration that occurs between October and February in this “season” because all holidays are important! I’ve been an expat for over four years, and something that living in a culture other than my own has shown me is the huge benefit of having a diverse social group … lots of holidays means lots of reasons to celebrate.
For this reason, I decided to create a holiday collection instead of a “Christmas” collection. These patterns are wintry, festive, and of course, floral, and my hope is that they embody the joy and festivity of the season, no matter which holiday you’re celebrating.
Our Wintry Woodland fabric collection features 14 patterns built from the same floral elements and motifs that built up our holiday greeting card collection this year! You can find those holiday cards, plus a 2019 calendar and a few other goodies from our winter 2019 product line right here!
I chose a neutral color palette for these patterns, relying heavily on our signature navy for the background of the majority of the prints. One thing I did a little differently in these designs is a splash of red! I almost never use red in my florals, and it’s a color I really have a hard time embracing! But the holiday season is all about red. I actually chose this particular hue based on the gorgeous scarlet envelopes I found for our holiday cards. I LOVE the color of these envelopes: it’s a deep, yet vibrant scarlet which to me felt like the perfect color to be the “splash of warm” in this pattern collection. Though it’s not featured in every pattern, I really feel like the red is what carries this collection!
The overall mood of the collection was inspired by the past few winters I’ve spent in Norway with my husband and his family! Being from Tennessee, the idea of a snowy Christmas is something I’ve seen more in movies than in real life, but since marrying a Norwegian I have been fortunate enough to celebrate the holidays in one of the snowiest places in the world.
For this collection, I pulled inspiration from the dark winter nights and mysterious forests of Norway, plus a dash of that retro Scandi design aesthetic which I absolutely love!
The winters I’ve spent in Norway are largely characterized by the fact that we only got 3-4 hours of sunlight a day. It was dark, sometimes gloomy, near impossible to take well lit photos (golden hour lasted about 15 minutes) but always a bit magical, especially when the snow came! Here are a few of my favorite photos from that time. Talk about winter magic!!
In addition to pulling my initial inspiration from such a gorgeous place, I had fun with the florals in this collection. Some of them are pulled directly from our 2019 Moonlit Garden Wall Calendar, which features a variety of flowers found in night gardens. The Moonlit Garden calendar is available for purchase in our shop here! Alternatively, some of the florals were designed specifically for this collection. Two of the most prominent florals featured are the Ruby Red Cosmo and the Winter Nightshade. See both these prints in the wallpapers below!
For the past six months, I’ve been giving away free desktop calendars every month for the subscribers to my email list. My calendar for December 2018 featured one of the patterns from this collection!
I named this pattern Wintry Woodland and then named the rest of the collection after it! I love this pattern in particular because it captures a bit of the mod, retro, and vintage style of Scandinavian design, which was a huge influence in this collection.

In completing this fabric collection, I added several complementary prints that use the same colors and tones from the floral patterns, and are made to pair with the more eye-grabbing feature designs. These complementary prints are made for sewing and quilting projects, and are perfect for the little details like lining and trim!
I also created my first-ever plaid as a complement for this collection! You can see it in a few of the photos here. I actually created it originally for another collection which will be released soon, but the colors fit perfectly with this collection too, and what’s a winter collection without a plaid?
You can find all the fabrics in this collection, including both the primaries and complementary prints, in the Root & Branch Paper Co. Spoonflower shop!
